This panel discussion led by Rosanne Ellis of AUT looks at how SportsTech can improve the lives of everyday New Zealanders, as well as addressing how we can overcome accessibility and equity challenges.

Dr Rosanne Ellis

Associate Pro Vice Chancellor – Research Engagement

Rosanne is the Associate Pro Vice Chancellor Research Engagement at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). Prior to joining AUT in 2014, she was General Manager, Business Partnerships (NZ, Australia & Pacific) at Auckland UniServices Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary and commercial arm of the University of Auckland.
Her passion lies in connecting research, talented people and technologies with real world problems to solve global challenges. She believes innovation through partnerships is the key to successful knowledge translation.
Over her career, Rosanne has held business development and commercialisation management roles with Industrial Research Ltd (now Callaghan Innovation) and URS NZ Ltd, working with clients across a diverse range of industry sectors, as well as local and central government agencies. She has lead Callaghan Innovation’s Global Expert service – connecting NZ companies with local and international experts to overcome business and research challenges. Post-graduation, Rosanne worked in Germany and Switzerland providing risk and environmental management consultancy services.

Patria Hume

Professor of Human Performance

Patria Hume is Professor of Human Performance at Auckland University of Technology’s Sport Performance Research Institute New Zealand (SPRINZ). She has an international reputation in sports biomechanics, kinanthropometry and sports injury prevention. Her work has been recognised with national and international awards, including the most prestigious award in her field – the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports Geoffrey Dyson Award 2016. She was the 2016 AUT University Medalist for her outstanding contribution to​​​ research and sustained and exceptional academic achievement. With over 600 scholarly publications her work has been cited over 5000 times.

Steve Leftly

Founder, Myovolt Limited

World-leading expert in the field of electronic textiles Steve has worked as research
scientist in the smart textiles or wearable technology field since it became one. Steve
has worked as Senior Scientist for Canesis where he co-founded Softswitch technology and Fibretronic, both pioneers in textile electronics. He has also authored many technology patents while working with leading global brands such as Nike, Apple, Levis, Adidas, and North Face developing and scaling their wearable electronic product solutions. Steve is now managing the Myovolt developing the world’s first Wearable Vibration Technology for sports performance, injury recovery
and medical applications.

Parn Jones

Director, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer

Master of Engineering Alumnus and Director, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at start-up Avice. Parn and his Co-founders has developed a wearable device that gives you real-time and actionable feedback when you’re lifting weights. “Avice uses a novel, patent-pending sensor technology that has been proven to detect muscle performance failure, in real time,” The team came up with the idea while working on their research projects at the AUT Institute of Biomedical Technologies and are currently working with the AUT Ventures team to turn their idea into a finished product.
