Māori are enjoying a stellar year of innovation. In the lead up to tonight’s 2019 Māori Hi-Tech Awards announcement, we talk to some award finalists, past and present, about their views on what makes a successful Māori business. How have they personally made the journey from startup to kiwi success story?
Also, prior to the Matariki X conference on 26 July, we ask our panel for their thoughts on what more can be done to achieve the Aotearoa 2040 Report objectives of growing a more productive, innovative and internationally connected Māori economy.

Morris Pita
Morris Pita (Ngatiwai me Ngati Hine) is the Chief Executive and founder of Healthcare Applications Ltd, the developer the Emergency Q platform which reduces overcrowding in hospital emergency departments. The software gained national recognition when it won the 2018 NZ Hi-Tech awards (Public Good category) and the B:Hive race for space competition. It is currently in use at Middlemore and North Shore Hospitals and being rolled out to other DHBs in 2019. Discussions are underway in overseas markets where non-acute patient utilisation of EDs is a significant challenge.
During his business career Morris has worked in NZ and the UK in a range of commercial and strategic roles for Mercury, BG Group (FTSE-25) and Ernst & Young. He also has wide ranging governance experience across a number of sectors. He has an MBA from the University of Oxford and a Master of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Auckland.
Tanya Wilson
Tanya Wilson is Business Relationship Manager within Callaghan Innovation’s Māori Economy team. In her current role and previous work with the Ministry for Māori Development, Tanya has engaged with many key stakeholders across regional business communities and central government agencies to help develop strategies and support networks to grow Māori innovation and enterprise. Prior to her government roles, Tanya owned her own consultancy business, designing and developing IT business solutions. Her experiences running an SME have provided Tanya with valuable insights into the business needs of her current Callaghan Innovation customers.
Steve Saunders
A tech enthusiast with a passion for using emerging technologies to preserve and share the stories of indigenous peoples. Amber (Ngati Whatua, Te Rarawa, Ngati Mutunga) is the CEO of Augmented Reality Applications (ARA), a company she co-founded in 2018. ARA designs and creates environmental-based, digital experiences that connect people to cultural stories of the land, preserves mātauranga Māori, encourages the use of Te Reo Māori, and helps grow Māori enterprises. ARA’s platform is educating and encouraging people to explore the outdoors, supporting Iwi across Aotearoa in sharing their stories and bringing communities closer together.
