Techweek TV: A look inside Dunedin’s thriving innovative tech hub

What’s driving the entrepreneurs that are shaping Dunedin’s innovation landscape?

What's it all about?

Ian Taylor’s Animation Research is undoubtedly a New Zealand tech success story. Its trailblazing animation for television and for sports graphics like the last America’s Cup race coverage has put Dunedin on the world’s ICT/digital media map. Dunedin also boasts strong high-tech manufacturing exporters like high-end fireplace company ESCEA.

Join the Callaghan Innovation team and a selection of Dunedin’s hi-tech business leaders as we examine Dunedin’s thriving and diverse tech hub and start-up scene. What support networks are driving local innovation? How can the new Scale-Up NZ platform connect Dunedin’s tech firms with like-minded innovators, investors and advisors throughout Aotearoa? What more can be done to accelerate their growth?

Jesse Meek

CEO, CodeLingo

Jesse Meek is the CEO and Founder of Dunedin-based CodeLingo. His company (codelingo.io) is tackling technical debt, a one trillion dollar problem,* at its source. It has developed a SaaS solution that scans computer software code for errors and automatically corrects them. Rather than targeting the symptoms of coding error (like monitoring system performance and bugs), CodeLingo is going for the cause. It safeguards the quality of source code and guides a developer's contributions to ensure they conform to best practice. Jesse’s background is in software engineering and he has previously worked for Canonical.

Ian Taylor

Founder/Managing Director, Animation Research Ltd

In 2010 Ian was awarded North & South Magazine’s New Zealander of the Year Award. This is how the editorial announced the award back then.

“In a year of recession when at times there seemed little to celebrate, North & South magazine pays tribute to an inspirational innovator who has put Dunedin on the map – and never stopped believing that Kiwis can take on the world. in 2008, just 18 months ago, Ian Taylor was on the verge of bankruptcy. A world leader in high-tech computer graphics for two decades, he arrived at his Dunedin office to tell his team that the company would have to close.

As he walked past his receptionist she showed him the front page of that morning’s newspaper announcing the closure of a local factory with the loss of hundreds of jobs.
“I can still remember her saying, ‘God, how awful would that be,’” says Taylor. “And I thought, ‘Well, I can’t do it today.’” In North & South’s January 2010 issue we profile a man whose
maverick style and ability to inspire the passion of those around him saw him claw back from the brink to rebuild his company exporting Kiwi ingenuity to the world.”

Over a decade on from facing down that challenge Ian was this year named 2019 Kiwi Bank New Zealand Innovator of the Year.

Nigel Bamford

CEO/Director, ESCEA

My favorite thing is business, done well. Unfortunately in a lot of companies, business is not done well. At Escea we have spent a decade making constant (and never ending) improvements to this business and our resultant success is hugely satisfying to be part of. We are well on the way to our goal of being the largest fireplace company that is based in NZ or AUS and each year we have built further on our foundation of great technology, great design, disciplined process and smart marketing.
