Techweek Highlight Event

Techweek TV: How Kiwis are tackling the global waste problem

Learn how the Kiwi Tech industry is showing the world how to decrease waste that contaminates the environment, or goes to landfill.

What's it all about?

An estimated 80,000 tonnes of e-waste and hundreds of thousands of tonnes of food waste go to landfill in New Zealand every year. The issues here not only include environmental impacts, toxicity and land space. Some of the materials sent to landfill, particularly for e-waste, are becoming increasingly scarce.

This session dives into these difficult realities, but provides a ray of hope from some trail blazers in Aotearoa. Join this discussion as industry experts lead the conversation on the problems we face as a country, what’s being done now to combat these issues and what must be done now and in the future.

Michal Garvey

Founder, Foodprint

Michal Garvey, the Founder of Foodprint, has combined her passion for food, technology and sustainability to allow us to be better for our world one meal at a time.

Michal believes we all have a part to play in making better choices to reduce our environmental impact. We live in a time where technology can provide us with solutions to change our damaging habits. Humans must do better; the fact that one-third of food produced for human consumption is wasted is simply not good enough. Food should be treated as a precious commodity and fulfil its intended purpose of nourishment and enjoyment. Identifying the role that technology plays in the way we source, purchase and consume food, Michal saw a gap in New Zealand’s food system. Foodprint provides a practical, easy-to-use solution that is appealing to users and eateries we partner with; allowing both to reduce their foodprint.

Michal’s background working in start-ups experiencing unprecedented growth has prepared her for leading her own business. She has developed Foodprint with a vision that goes long into our future and a purpose rooted in the Sustainable Development Goals.

Foodprint is a winner of the 2019 Good Food Boost Competition run by the Sustainable Business Network and ATEED.
